Taking the Fear out of Selling

by Madonna on March 1, 2013

Take the Fear out of SellingIn the last couple of decades selling has gotten a really bad rap. Perhaps we could blame the used car sales mentality, the hard sell we have been exposed to from the budding Amway executive or the dinner time assault we are subjected to from Indian call centres.

It could have something do with sheer amount of advertising messages we are bombarded with on a daily basis from a multitude of media sources. Whatever the reason, most of us seem to be suffering from sales overkill in one way or another and sales has become a dirty word.

It is not surprising then that sales people, network marketers and small business owners are finding it harder and harder to promote their products and services without feeling like a sleazy salesperson. And let’s be honest. No one wants to feel like that.

But does it have to be like that? The truth is it is possible to promote your business or product and ask for the sale without all that trepidation and without holding back.

In the last few years we have been told about internet marketing, attraction marketing and now relationship marketing. While all of these approaches work and have major benefits all of them have one thing in common. You, the seller! Unless you have a killer sales copy and a product that solves a real product and virtually sells itself online with the click of a button, one thing is for sure. All sales involve a direct exchange between the seller and the buyer.

Trying to sell your products or services without a huge marketing and advertising budget means that you have to be at the selling coalface every day and that means showing up full of confidence, enthusiasm and high energy.

But how can you stay in the peak performance zone necessary if you hate the very idea of selling? How can you ask for the sale if you feel afraid to do so? How can you sell if you think sales are sleazy.

The truth is you can’t for long. Eventually, the fear and the anxiety turn to reluctance and procrastination starts to set in. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to make sales if you are not getting yourself in front of enough people.

What is this fear of selling and how do we get past it?

Most of us who have experienced this fear say it is the Fear of Rejection. Others claim it is what they imagine the prospect will think of them, while many inexperienced ‘sellers’ feel nervous about not sounding like an expert. And these are simply a few of the reasons we trot out to explain our fear of selling.

While all of these provide absolutely plausible reasons for our general aversion to selling, there is a common denominator present in each and every sales fear. If we are honest enough to strip bare the fear of rejection to its origins, we would find a self image that needs a boost. Why would we be concerned about not sounding like an expert if at some level we didn’t doubt ourselves? Do we really care so much about what others think of us or are we really projecting our own less than shaky self image on to our prospects?

But you might argue that you have a good solid self image. You think highly of yourself and you know your product or service is the best. But what self image are we talking about here? The one you dust off and take with you when you go to work, meet with a client or present an elevator speech, you know the fabricated one the presents you in the best possible light, the one you’ve rehearsed and polished and now actually consciously believe?

The self image that shows up when you are in your comfort zone is not your true self image.

Our real self image shows up when we start to move out of our comfort zone.

The state of our self image is the breeding ground for sales fear. That’s why I tell my clients to work on it every day. And that is why I also work on my own self image daily to maintain an attitude of peak performance.

The truth is if we want to take the fear out of selling, then continue to give that self image a daily boost. If you would like to know more about boosting your self image and taking the fear out of selling contact me to schedule a free, (no obligation) 15 minute consult.
