Suffering from Sales Shame?Sales shame is that uncomfortable feeling that sometimes arises when you are engaging in the sales process.  It often occurs during the closing stage just before you are about to ask for the sale.  That feeling of shame starts to rise, your energy drops and you pull back.

What causes that feeling?  For some reason, there seems to be a general consensus that salespeople are sleazy, untrustworthy or at the very least, pushy. But, the business of sales is no more than an exchange of goods and services for cash.  What is shameful about that?  The whole world is involved in the business of sales one way or another.

Why is sales so shameful?              

That’s an interesting question. My personal opinion is that so many of us are so busy trying to appear nice to others.   Because we feel terrible saying ‘No’ to people we tend to feel annoyed with salespeople and project our feelings on to them. We tend to blame them for our inability to be assertive and simply say, ‘No thanks.’

Of course, salespeople themselves have done little over the years to correct that image of the ‘pushy’ salesperson.  But, the truth is there is nothing shameful about selling.  Without the exchange of goods and services civilisation would not have advanced beyond the Stone Age.

Do You Have Sales Shame?

  • Do you hate making cold calls?
  • Do you procrastinate over follow up calls?
  • Do you feel awkward at network meetings?
  • Do you hesitate to promote your business?
  • Do you hold back from asking the sale?
  • Do you have difficulty charging what you are worth?
  • Do you worry that you might be thought of as a ‘salesperson’?
  • Do you feel you are ‘above’ sales?

If you answered ‘Yes’ to a couple of these questions, then you are probably feeling sales shame.

Sales shame really does affect your ability to convert prospects into customers.

If you are in small business, it is in your best interest to get over sales shame if you have it.  Often we feel a certain way and we are not sure why.  Think about it.  What is there to be ashamed of?  We all sell something at some stage. The teenager tries to sell her parents the idea that she is old enough to date.  The parent tries to sell the child that vegetables are good for them.  The next door neighbour tries to sell you on paying half for the new fence.  Even if you are not in business, you sell your labour for money.  The politician tries to sell the new fiscal policy.  Selling is a vital component of living.

So, if you have sales shame, perhaps it is time to reconsider your beliefs in this area, unless of course you don’t need any more money or any more clients.

The truth is there is nothing shameful about sales.
