Actually many telemarketers are poor suffering souls, often from foreign countries who have no other career options but to intrude on our time.

Cold calling isn’t only for telemarketers and sleazy salespeople.  But it does have a bad reputation.  Combine that with the apprehension we feel around rejection and most of us avoid it like the plague.  But is it really that bad?  How can we get one step ahead of the business game and use the cold call to our advantage.

There’s no doubt that cold calling can be very beneficial and profitable for your business.  Here are a few ways you can cold call to generate more business;

  • Set up joint ventures

Joint ventures are an excellent and low cost means of expanding your business.  In the wedding industry, photographers can joint venture with florists and wedding celebrants and cake makers and car hire firms.  The possibilities are endless, but the connections and referrals won’t happen without that initial call.


  • Get yourself a speaking opportunity

A simple cold call can land you a speaking opportunity that has the potential to generate new business, make you seen as an expert and bring more clients to your door.


  • Make a connection with a prospect

If you are in the habit like me of picking up business cards and then calling those people, then it almost seems like a warm call when you say, “I picked up your card at ………and I was wondering if…………”


  • Offer your product or service to another business

This is one area in which the possibilities are endless.  Training organisations can develop business opportunities by tailoring training to company needs.

Masseurs could provide neck and shoulder massages to staff during lunch breaks.

Alternative practitioners can provide stress management strategies for workers in high stress occupations.

Cleaning businesses can call large companies to see if they are happy with their current cleaning providers.
