The Money is in the Follow Up

Grow your business.  Follow up. I know you’ve heard it before but do you do it?

Jean is a massage therapist who went to a network meeting the other night where she collected a few business cards. She had a few interesting conversations and decided that Harry, the IT guy and Susan, the network marketer were definitely prospects. She knows that because she asked Susan if she ever had massages before and Susan said she loved having regular massages but her masseuse had moved interstate.

Harry revealed in the course of conversation how stressful his job was and that sometimes he got headaches and a sore neck.

So, what does Jean do now?

Does she put their cards in her card holder?

Does she decide to call them both tomorrow and offer her services?

Does Jean follow up?

What do you think? Well, according to statistics,

48% of sales people never follow up with a prospect.

Now, if half of the salespeople in the world don’t follow up on prospects, what do you think the likelihood of Jean the massage therapist calling Susan or Harry?  Pretty low I would assume.

Do you follow up?

Once you have identified someone as a prospect, follow them up.  Get on the phone with them. And do it the next day.  Next week is too late.

What?  You’re afraid to follow up?

But they are clearly in the market for what you offer.  You can solve a problem for them. That has already been established.  So, what’s the problem?

Oh, you don’t want to bother them?  If a friend rang you with a solution to a problem you had, would that be bothering you?  Of course not.

Oh, but you might come across like a used car salesman?  Well, do you think you sound like a used car salesman?  You do realise that someone else’s perception is up to them, don’t you?

Just be yourself.  You had no problem last night conversing at the network meeting. Be conversational.  They either want ypur product or service or they don’t.   It’s no big deal.  Learn to tell yourself better stories instead of the limiting ones you’ve been telling yourself.
