What is Cold Calling and Why Are We So Afraid of It?

Why Are We So Afraid of Cold Calling?Many people have asked me lately, ‘What is cold calling?’  Wikipedia describes cold calling as

 the marketing process of approaching prospective customers or clients—typically via telephone, by email or through making a connection on a social network, who were not expecting such an interaction. The word “cold” is used because the person receiving the call is not expecting a call or has not specifically asked to be contacted by a sales person. A cold call is usually the start of a sales process.

Cold calling is typically viewed by many as a dreaded and extremely fearful  activity.  Comments  ranging from ‘I’d rather have a root canal,’ or ‘clean toilets with a toothbrush’ spring to mind when referring to cold calling.

Now, looking at the definition above, the act of picking up the phone and calling another human being does not at first appear to be so terrifying, until the moment it becomes real.

Cold calling appears to have the potential to reduce normally rational, fearless and even successful people to feeling like a terrified kid.  Why is that?  The same type of response occurs in a person who experiences a phobia.

Consider a phobic response to spiders.  When an arachnophobe encounters a harmless spider, their response is well and truly out of proportion with the actual event.  The response is driven by neural pathways in the brain that have usually been created by a significant negative encounter with a spider in the past. The original fear was not discharged  and it  keeps triggering that same neural pathway in the present whenever a spider enters the line of vision.

A similar response occurs with the very thought of cold calling. Although we didn’t sit by the phone and cold call as children, we did spend an inordinate amount of time asking for things and getting a negative response.  Most adults can relate to this in some way. How many times were you told as a child to ‘Stop asking for things,’ or ‘Don’t bother me now, I’m busy.’

Strange as it might seem today because we are adults, these admonishments as children still deter us from asking for what we want, because at the time they occurred we might have decided that we were a bother by asking for things.  We might have decided that we didn’t deserve to have what we wanted.  Those decisions we made at an earlier time form the basis of our call reluctance and together with the regularity of the responses  create the negative neural pathway in the brain, much like the wheel of a car wearing a track over a muddy path.

The other aspect to consider in relation to call reluctance is the rejection that some children and young adults have faced in their life.  If rejection occurred regularly in our lives, or we experienced a particularly painful episode, then that also can have an impact on our feelings of rejection.  These feelings are then triggered by the possibility of being rejected by the person on the other end of the line, hence our reluctance to experience a potentially painful event.

How do I know this?  Because most clients who experience call reluctance lose that reluctance once those feelings are discharged through Energy Psychology.

So, the reluctance to make cold calls can be explained, but that does not always mean that simply by knowing where the fear originated, it then becomes easy to pick up that phone and call a complete stranger with the intention to initiate a sales process.

Logic does not always prevail in the case of cold calling and the reason for that is simple.  Logic relates to knowing, but a reluctance to cold call stems from a feeling, whose original cause has been driven into the unconscious mind.  Feelings do not always respond to logic, so shifting a feeling can often require a different approach.
