Why Aren’t You Prospecting Every Day?

Why Aren't You Prospecting Every Day?If you are not prospecting every day, then perhaps you don’t need any more business or any more money. Marketing 101 tells us that new businesses should spend about 80% of their time on marketing the business.  How much time are you spending?

Prospecting is a great marketing tool.

Prospecting is a great marketing tool for business on a small advertising budget, because it only costs you your time and maybe a small fee to attend a network meeting. You can of course, do as I do and prospect from your computer.  It’s an easy and relatively rejection free way to increase the time you spend prospecting. But, don’t rely on that method alone.  Nothing beats personal contact.

So, why aren’t you prospecting?

The Excuses

1.  Time

You don’t have time?  Are there just too many other more important tasks to concern your self with?  Sounds like an excuse to me. If your website is not a cash generating machine, then prospecting is the most important task you can engage in and should be given top priority.

Don’t make excuses, make time.

2.  Prospecting doesn’t work

Who told you that?  You might have read that cold calling is dead.  Cold calling where you randomly pitch a sales message to the wrong person is dead, but selective and targeted phone prospecting is not dead. Neither is the personal contact created by attending regular network meetings.  If your time is limited, schedule time for both prospecting in person and by phone.  It does pay off.

And get educated on the right way to prospect.  Read books on the subject.  The internet is filled with information on the right way to prospect.

The Truth

The truth is if you are not prospecting daily you have some kind of block about it.

Fear of Rejection?

Oh no, not the dreaded fear of rejection. Let’s face it. Rejection is not fun.  It feels terrible.  By the time we reach adulthood, we have all experienced rejection.  This fear has the potential to stop us in our tracks, immobilize us and severely limit our ability to grow our business.

Top salespeople have all learned how to handle rejection, or maybe they have thick skins. The internet is full of tips to deal with sales rejection. Here are some techniques I gleaned from Mr Google;

  • Don’t take it personally
  • Remember it is a numbers game and ‘no’s are inevitable on the road to ‘yes.’
  • Determine the cash value of each rejection based on your closing rate and decide to do it anyway.

Yeah right, as if that is going to make you feel better?

There are many inner road blocks which can make prospecting seem like a daunting task.  Find out what stories you have been telling yourself and deal with them.

Move beyond the fear of prospecting

What if there was a way to change your perception about the fear of rejection so you really didn’t feel the same way about it.  Would you be interested in learning more?

What if you really were able to feel that if someone wasn’t a fit for your business then it didn’t matter?

What if you never took rejection personally again?  Would that make a difference to your business?

Zap those thoughts about prospecting

Most of us can’t change the way we feel about certain things even if we know they won’t actually harm us.  You know that prospecting won’t hurt you and yet you still feel reluctant to actually do it.  That’s why it’s so hard to move beyond the uneasy feeling associated with prospecting.  You predict the outcome to be negative, which means rejection, which means feeling awful.

The Thought Zapper can change the way you feel about prospecting and rejection. Don’t take my word for it.  Read what others have said after one session with me.
